The Kiplingcotes Derby

...is one of the many attractions in East Yorkshire but this has to be one of the more famous. Held annually on the 3rd Thursday of March the race takes place over 4 grueling miles across the Wolds. Each horse must carry 10 stones any shortfall must be borne by the rider NOT in the saddle.

The winner receives £50 and the second £4 of the entry fee for each rider who participates. Therefore 12 riders and second receives 12x4=£48 but if there are 13 riders the equation is 13x4=£52 ie second place can often be more lucrative... only in Yorkshire.

This year the Kiplingcotes was run in the worst weather anyone can remember and was won by John Thirsk of Holme Upon Spalding Moor riding Maisey.

This was his second attempt, last year he came 5th after loosing and iron and riding without stirrups for more than 2 miles on Cool Affair. John now sings soprano in the local choir....
