MALTON

Sited about 30 miles to the north west, Malton makes a nice day out, especially on Saturday’s when the market is in full swing.

Throughout history, Malton has been strategically important, and even today its easy to see why. Located around a crossroads, where a mighty castle once stood, today the options are still the same YORK, PICKERING, HOVINGHAM or BEVERLEY.

About 300 yards up from the crossroads towards PICKERING is the LODGE Hotel. Don’t be put off by the title “hotel”, the LODGE is one of the most friendly places. They make you equally welcome whether its a simple coffee or a full carvery you require - thoroughly recommended.

Spend a while and explore, there is the small museum that used to be the town hall, the cinema and its little shopping mall or the quaint shambles. However if you want to step back in time and visit a good old-fashioned hardware store, where you can buy a widget for a wamboozal - in any size or colour - then you must visit Yates’.....

For those into films, have a look at the church and see if you recognise it? It was used in the opening sequence of the film about James Herriot in All Creatures Great and Small..... as Michael Caine would say “not many people know that.......

And when you do eventually leave, take a tour of the local villages, with gems like LANGTON you cannot fail to be impressed.
